A Day in the Life of McHale & Co - June 2012

Sorry for being away for a while; we have been very busy! Friday the 29th June sees us flat-out as usual.

In Domestic Conveyancing we are having our busiest week of the year so far with 20 completions (barring no more issues with Natwest!). This has the whole of the conveyancing team, lead by Nicola Nolan, working constantly to ensure that everyone gets into their houses despite the numerous hurdles put in our way at the last minute.

Our Polish Solicitor, Marta Grzelak is busy as ever with more Polish client's deciding to settle in the UK; Marta has been instructed on 5 new conveyancing matters this morning!

Steve Pinnington, a family Law Partner, spent the morning in the office drafting documents and chasing up clients for instructions. This afternoon he will be drafting a divorce petition and warning letter, arranging weekend contact for 2 fathers, amending a divorce petition and reviewing a professional negligence file.

In our Personal Injury department, Nina Mahaffy is drafting an appeal review application to the CICA for a client who was assaulted and suffered a brain injury as a result. Its frustrating knowing that real justice hasn't been done because of a minor technicality but we'll soon get it sorted. Annemarie Smith is researching the principle of Insurable Interest where a policyholder does not actually own a vehicle; it will help us with a client whose insurers have insisted he should stand in the face of a claim against his policy.

In the Litigation Department, Matthew Kelly received a call from HMRC this morning to say that a client's appeal against over £50,000 worth of CIS penalties has been upheld... this is 3 weeks after the hearing of HMRC's petition to try to wind-up the company for non-payment! This afternoon Matthew will be preparing for a hearing on Monday morning and continuing to deal with disputes with brokers, insurers, solicitors, non-payers, and of course banks. This morning Paul Fitton is drafting instructions to Counsel in a debt dispute for a client whose claim is worth in excess of £20,000. It's our opinion that the Defence should be struck out and that judgment be entered in favour of our client.

And this afternoon Paul is multitasking and undertaking some Criminal work. He is advising a client who was recently convicted in the Magistrates Court for a Road Traffic Offence. Paul is advising the client of the pros and cons of appealing the decision to the Crown Court where their conviction could be quashed or their sentence could be increased.

Over in our Heywood office, Partner Jim Schofield has a bit of a mixed bag today. He is sorting out property issues on a barn conversion, taking new instructions from the seller of a business and granting a lease to the buyer, progressing two leases to schools as part of the Academy conversion process and advising a director as to his position following the liquidation of his company!

Partner Jim Waldron, also at our Heywood office, is seeing a client to execute his will, drafting three wills for three different clients who had provided instructions earlier in the week, preparing a Lasting Power of Attorney, preparing a Deputy's Annual Report in relation to a Court of Protection matter and advising a client in relation to the recent death of her father who had died intestate.

Philippa Wright is our newest trainee and she works alongside Jim Waldron & Jim Schofield and is based at both offices. This morning Philippa attended a presentation to hear about the economic outlook by Invesco Perpetual, with a colleague in the Financial Services Industry. This afternoon she will be preparing some Wills for clients who wanted a 7 day turnaround.

And finally Partners Andrew McHale & Michael Muldoon are "working" very hard networking (their words not mine!) at the Irish Golf Society Charity golf day in Northenden. Many of our construction industry clients are present and it's hoped that plenty of money will be raised for charity. It's just one more way that we like to strength our ties in the local community.

All in a day's "work" here at McHale & Co!
