Our Litigation Partner went back to School in Halifax

Matthew Bell, a Partner with the firm, attended the North Halifax Grammar School Challenge of Management Conference last Monday and Tuesday to act as a business advisor to Lower Sixth Students.

'This is the third year I have attended and see this as a way to give something back to the school as I myself was a student there and indeed I too attended the conference when I was 17. Back then I found the conference extremely helpful in that it tries to teach the students to be more commercially aware in their chosen careers'.

The conference relies upon advisors like Matthew volunteering their time and sees the students start a new company in a virtual marketplace, initially trading in the confectionary market, before developing a new product to sell to potential investors at a trade fair.

'After the initial few minutes of the students asking why on earth the conference is of relevance to them, they soon see that irrespective of their intended career, having a grasp of the business world is an important attribute, and get stuck in accordingly. This year they developed a very handy safety device for parents of young children and it shows that irrespective of their relative immaturity in business, their youth can often be an important factor in developing a new product'.
