Ramadan is a deeply significant time for many Muslims around the world, and at McHale & Co, we are proud to support our colleagues who are observing this holy month. As a firm that values social impact, and community, we believe it is important not only to recognise Ramadan but also to actively foster a supportive and understanding workplace for those observing it.
When is Ramadan this year?
This year, Ramadan began on 18 February and will end on 19 March 2026. The exact dates change each year as they are based on the lunar calendar.
The end of Ramadan is marked by the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, a festival that brings families and communities together in celebration.
What is Ramadan?
Ramadan recognises one of the five pillars of Islam: fasting.
During the month, Muslims abstain from eating and drinking between sunrise and sunset as a means of introspection, self-reflection and a time to reflect on their faith. It is also a time when many Muslims increase their charitable activities.
After sunset, the fast is broken with a meal known as Iftar, which is often shared with family, friends, and members of the local community.
Not all Muslims observe the fast during Ramadan. Some may be exempt due to ill health, travel, menstruation, pregnancy, or other personal circumstances, while others may choose not to fast.
The importance of creating a supportive workplace during Ramadan
Fasting can have an impact on energy levels and daily routines, so it is important that workplaces create supportive environments for employees observing Ramadan.
There are many simple but meaningful ways organisations can support their colleagues during this time. The NHS Employers website recommends the following ways to support staff during Ramadan:
- Raising awareness and understanding of Ramadan among staff
- Offering flexible working arrangements where possible
- Accommodating annual leave requests for Eid al-Fitr
- Creating a space which can be used for prayers
- Reschedule staff meal days
These actions help foster an inclusive workplace where colleagues feel respected and valued.
How are we supporting our colleagues during Ramadan?
This month, members of our Personal Injury team have chosen to fast in solidarity with our colleague Faisal Haroon who is observing Ramadan.
This act of solidarity is testament to the closeness of the team and reflects our firm’s values of Team First and Be Kind in action. What began as an individual religious observance has become a shared experience that has strengthened understanding, empathy, and connection across the team.
Speaking with Faisal, he shared
“The month of Ramadan has always been a deeply personal and special time for me.
This year, however, it feels even more significant.
I am incredibly moved by the support, empathy, and sheer enthusiasm shown by my colleagues and team. Many have chosen to embrace the spirit of Ramadan by observing fasts alongside me, transforming a personal belief into a shared journey of empathy and solidarity.
To my team: thank you for not just respecting my religious beliefs, but for walking beside me. Your support makes the long hours feel light and serves as a beautiful reminder of the inclusive culture we are building together.”
We are proud of our team for demonstrating such compassion and unity. Moments like this reflect the culture we are committed to building which is one where everyone feels supported to bring their whole selves to work.
