Legal Landscape of the Yorkshire’s Green Energy Enablement Project

The Yorkshire Green Energy Enablement (GREEN) project is a significant project by National Grid Electricity Transmission to enhance and expand Yorkshire’s high-voltage power network. This project is crucial for delivering cleaner, low-carbon energy to local homes and businesses, and it involves constructing new substations, overhead lines, and underground cables.

As a legal advisor for a regional utility company, I played a key role in the Yorkshire GREEN project by completing a Crossing and Proximity Deed. This deed is vital for the project’s success, dealing with the construction of new infrastructure that intersects with existing high-pressure gas pipelines. These pipelines are considered hazardous and need extra precautions beyond what is covered by the Development Consent Order (DCO).

The Crossing and Proximity Deed is an agreement that ensures the new project’s construction does not compromise the safety of these pipelines. It specifies protective measures, like engineering solutions and emergency plans, to guard against any damage. Negotiating this deed involved detailed discussions with engineers, safety professionals, and surveyors to address all potential risks and protect public safety and the environment.

This work highlights the important role legal professionals have in supporting sustainable development and ensuring the safety and compliance of critical infrastructure projects like the Yorkshire GREEN initiative.
