Supporting Major Development of an Enterprise Zone

I recently had the opportunity to play a key role in a significant development project next to the Nissan Motors UK car plant, off the A19 in Sunderland. This initiative, a joint venture between Sunderland and South Tyneside Council, covers an enterprise zone of over 360 acres, aiming to attract £150 million in investment and create around 7,000 jobs.

A central aspect of this development was the diversion of an intermediate pressure gas main and two additional 450mm pipelines essential for the site’s infrastructure. These pipelines, running through and into the development, required careful management to ensure they were not built over, necessitating major pipeline works.

My involvement centered on representing the regional utility company, handling the preparation and completion of legal documentation: a Deed of Release and a Deed of Easement. These documents were important for the project’s progression, allowing for the necessary diversion of the gas pipelines to proceed without hindrance.

This experience shows how important accurate legal work is for supporting big development projects. It’s not just about navigating the legal landscape; it’s about providing the groundwork for investment, job creation, and community growth.
